From the Heart: Brittany Bass

from the heart Brittany Bass

Today I am four years sober, fully self supporting, ambitious and driven, and about to be a mother! I can honestly say on most days I have the happiness and peace I strived for as a little girl.

My name is Brittany Bass and I am a person in recovery. I was born in raised right here in Austin, TX. I am proof that you can get sober anywhere, even where you used.

Growing up in a good family, I still felt internally like something was always off. I struggled with what we call depression from an early age, and never quite felt like I fit in anywhere. I discovered drugs and alcohol at the young age of 14, and finally found “freedom”. I never thought I’d be able to live happily without opiates and alcohol.

I took multiple trips to detox centers, inpatient rehabs, alternative schools, and IOP’s. It never dawned on me that I might actually have to do the work that is suggested! I had gone through multiple external consequences as a result of my using–run ins with the police, going to the emergency room, losing relationships and friends, harming myself, doing things I’m not proud of, but when I decided I was finally ready for a change, the only thing that was really lost and broken were my insides.

I really surrendered myself to what I now call Universal God, and life unfolded from there. Today being in recovery doesn’t just look like twelve step work, it’s mental health, physical health, and spiritual growth. I believe that all a person in recovery really needs is the ability to remain honest and to strive to help others. God takes care of the rest!

Today I am four years sober, fully self supporting, ambitious and driven, and about to be a mother! I can honestly say on most days I have the happiness and peace I strived for as a little girl.
